Sonja Quimby is an Artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Sonja Quimby is a Twin Cities-based surrealist painter and illustrator creating fantasy-inspired works rendered using oil paints, watercolors, and pen and ink. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Art from the University of Minnesota in 2023. Quimby is currently continuing her studies at The Atelier Program of Fine Arts in Minneapolis.

I make whimsical paintings and drawings that use fantastical imagery to explore themes of beauty and pain with references to historic works from the Renaissance and Medieval Period.

Layering is a core aspect of my work, both in regards to technique and content, utilizing oil paint, watercolor, and ink. My work has undertones of darkness and humor, which contrasts to the slow, intentional manner in which my work is rendered. Despite the visuals I use being considered grotesque or obscure, their beauty is revealed in the delicate way they are depicted.
